The Gilgit Manuscripts : A Treasure Forgottensubmitted by TheNorthBlood to u/TheNorthBlood [link] [comments]
A couple of cattle grazers in 1931, in a village Naurpur near Gilgit once came upon a wooden box in a circular chamber in side a Buddhist stupa which contained a large number old Manuscripts pertaining to Buddhism. Little did they know that they had stumbled upon one of the most important finds of the century. The Gilgit Manuscripts are the oldest surviving religious Manuscripts from the sub-continent and of the oldest ones in Buddhism. The cattle grazers took the collection to the Wazir of Gilgit who in turn turned it over to the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir and the news of the discovery of this Great Treasure spread world wide. Opinions vary about the date of this manuscript. One branch of scholars says it was written in the second century AD., while another puts the date at somewhere between the sixth and seventh centuries.
Gilgit was at that time at the cross roads where South Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Asia met and it was an important stop on the Silk Road. Many monks from India carried the message of the Buddha from here to Tibet, China, Korea and even as far as Japan. It was along the Silk Road that Buddhism spread eastwards towards the rest of Asia. Gilgit hence played an important part in the spread of Buddhism and hence this find. The almost seventeen centuries old Gilgit Manuscript has been giving historians a hard time, as no one has yet been able to fully decipher it. The lamination of the manuscript by the National Archives of India sometime ago has once again put the limelight back on this all-important literature concerning India, Tibet, China, Japan and other neighbouring countries.
In fact in 1897 - 34 years before it was discovered - the Buddhist Text Society of Calcutta had published references to the Gilgit Manuscript saying that if it were ever to be found it would unravel the ancient history of several communities as it is considered to be the oldest Buddhist manuscript.A corpus of many Buddhist texts such as the Four Sutras from the Buddhist canon, including the famous Lotus Sutra, the Manuscripts survived because they were written on the bark of the Bhoj (Birch) Tree which does not decay and obviously helped by the sub zero temperatures in Gilgit. They were written in the Buddhist form of Sanskrit in the Sarada or the Sharda Script. The Gilgit Manuscripts deciphered thus far cover a wide range of subjects such as religion, religious rituals, philosophy, iconometry, monastic discipline, folk tales, medicine and culinary art.
The most famous of the Gilgit manuscripts, the Gilgit Lotus Sutra is preserved in the National Archives of India in Delhi. Known as the Saddharma Pundarika Sutra – or the teachings of the white lotus and sun – the sutra is the basis of the Tiantai and Nichiren schools of Buddhism. In 2012 a facsimile edition of it was published by by the National Archives jointly with the Institute of Oriental Philosophy and Soka Gakkai, a Japan-based non-governmental organization.
In August 1938, seven years after the discovery of the texts, the archaeologist Madhusudan Kaul Shastri led a systematic excavation of the Naupur site and discovered another larger chamber at the base of the structure. The chamber contained another set of the Gilgit Manuscripts along with votive objects and probably Buddhist cult bronzes."According to renowned scholar Karl Jettmar, inscriptions on these bronzes “reveal that they were produced and dedicated due to the generosity and the religious zeal of a Patola Shahi”. The Patola Shahis, also known as Palola Shahis, were the rulers of Gilgit and Baltistan from the late sixth to the early eighth centuries AD."Shortly after, Kaul Shastri and his team outlined the specifications of the second group of manuscripts and other finds from the site including the hand painted covers of two manuscripts."
In the third phase, the well-known Italian scholar Giuseppe Tucci secured another small group of the manuscripts in 1956. Obtaining them from a street vendor in Rawalpindi, he presented them to the Karachi museum."Roughly 60 manuscripts and 17 Avadnas emerging from Naupur are of unmatched significance in Buddhist studies. These are the oldest surviving collection of religious texts in the subcontinent. Based on the paleographical evidence, scholars agree that local Buddhist devotees compiled these texts between the fifth and sixth century AD. With the exception of only a few scripts, all the manuscripts were written on birch bark in Buddhist hybrid Sanskrit language in the Gupta Brahmi and post-Gupta Brahmi script. The manuscripts contain sutras from the Buddhist canon, the Samghata Sutra, Samadhiraja Sutra, Saddharma Pundarika Sutra, and Bhaisajyaguru Sutra. The Samadhiraja Sutra is one of the important Mahayana canonical texts, which are collectively called Navadharma.
The Saddharma Pundarika Sutra, popularly known as Lotus Sutra, figures prominently in the Gilgit Manuscripts and scholars agree it was the most venerated sutra of the Buddhists from the Gilgit area"Though the grammatical and literature aspects of the text are gradually becoming more of historical interest in the contemporary world, what is of interest is the social relevance of some of the sutras mentioned in the manuscript. Experts feel that when the full text is deciphered a common thread will be found in the language and people of countries like India China, Japan, Thailand, Tibet and Korea which would have the potential of altering the very geo-political map of the region.
At present the main collection is with the National Archives in New Delhi and some parts with the British Museum in London and at the Karachi Museum. Apparently Nehru had the many body of the Manuscripts bought by a special Plane from Srinagar in 1948 after the Tribal Invasion. However a small part of the manu scripts still lie at the Shri Partap Museum in Srinagar though not on display.
As luck would have it I managed to have a look and some parts of this Great Treasure at the Sri Partap Singh Museum yesterday and was even allowed to take photos. To come face to face with such a great treasure is truly a humbling experience and I could not help but tremble with excitement as the significance of what I was going to see. This is the Holy Grail of Buddhist Learning.
NOTE : Compiled from information on the Gilgit Manuscripts from various references on the Net.
PS : The Museum plans to put this on Display as it is shifting to a new Building and some Galleries are already open for Public viewing. The Museum has a great collection and is a must see when you visit Srinagar.
Update : Its now on Display at the Museum.

Marxists surrender unconditionally as Republic forces capture IslamabadADINA HASHIM 20th January 2052
KARACHI (Dawn) -- The Republic has triumphed over the incumbent Marxist faction in Islamabad, taking the city earlier today after a long, drawn out battle between the two forces. No official numbers have been released yet but our reporters, who have tried to get as close as possible to the action, estimate that casualties may exceed be well in the thousands including civilians. Property and infrastructure damage has also been severe, including the felling of Islamabad-Rawalpindi's Centaurus Mall, a popular spot among the locals of the area, in a massive artillery barrage by Republican forces - thankfully, no civilians were present in the towers at the time as it had been occupied by a Marxist military garrison that had "rigged the entire plaza to explode" according to sources on the ground and severe damage to the interior structure of the Pak Secretariat whose halls and conference rooms were the venue of a shootout between Marxist and Republic forces. Various small businesses and corporate offices in the Blue Zone have also suffered serious damage.
About seven minutes after the last garrison in Islamabad surrendered to the Republic, the Secretary-General of the Mazdoor Kisaan Party and President of Pakistan, Mr. Hamid Yousuf, was captured by SSG forces while attempting to flee the city along with a dozen other high-ranking members of the Marxist government - most other pro-Marxist politicians, party members, and prisoners of war were sent south to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to be incarcerated until trial while the high command was kept in Islamabad for reasons that would soon be revealed.
An hour and fifteen minutes after the fall of the city, the high command of the Republic of Pakistan's military government arrived in the capital by military transport jets and helicopters and took residence in the Aiwan-e-Sadr for the day. The command included various illustrious names such as General Taban Ali Khan, Chief of Staff, and Major General Adam Askari, long considered to be the man who would take up the mantle of 'President of Pakistan' once the civil war came to an end.
At exactly 19:47 pm, the Republic began a live broadcast of the peace signing between the military and the defeated Marxist government, led by a shell-shocked Hamid Yousuf, and the 'negotiations' were short. The following is a summary of the peace agreement signed between the People's Islamic Republic and the Republic of Pakistan, condensed into salient points.
At the end of the broadcast at about 20:52 pm, the military high command addressed the entire country, promising a new and better Pakistan, stating that this victory over evil marked the new beginnings of a prosperous and peaceful Republic.
- The Republic of Pakistan will be recognized as the sole, legitimate state representative of all people of Pakistan, in charge of its defense, foreign policy, and representation in the United Nations. The "People's Islamic Republic of Pakistan" shall hereby cede all rights to the names, all imagery and coat of arms, national standards, and political titles and ranks of Pakistan to the Republic, and will cease to exist.
- The Republic will immediately take over all international, military, and diplomatic functions previously held by the "People's Islamic Republic of Pakistan" including foreign military bases, embassies, and consulates.
- Hamid Yousuf and other high-ranking members of the Marxist government will stand trial on charges of corruption, embezzling of state funds, terrorism, sedition, and treason against the People of Pakistan. Until the date of their trial, they shall be incarcerated at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi and Central Prison, Karachi.

HMS Glasgow (C21) - The Scottish (Careless) Maid
HMS Glasgow (C21) was a Southampton-subclass, Town-class light cruiser of the Tea Royal Navy and the 7th ship to hear the name. As opposed to some of her fellow mates, Glasgow was a more careless maid as she accidentally sank 2 friendly ships (think twice if anyone is looking to appoint her to be the chief maid). However, she did take part in many actions in the Atlantic as well as in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. Together with many of her sisters, Glasgow was put into reserve after the war before being scrapped in the late 50s.
Glasgow, maybe prewar
Glasgow was ordered on December 17, 1934 at the Scotts Shipbuilding Company in Greenock as part of the Royal Navy's expansion program. She was the 7th ship to bear the name, with the first being a Scottish 6th-rate ship and the 6th one being a 1910 Town-class cruiser. She was laid down on April 16, 1935 and launched on June 20, 1936 by Mrs. Lucy Baldwin, the wife of former PM Stanley Baldwin. Glasgow-chan joined the maid team on September 9, 1937 after being completed. She was assigned to 2nd Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet.
Glasgow spent the first years of her career uneventful with some naval exercises and "flag showing". In May and June 1939, Glasgow and her big sister Southampton escorted liner RMS Empress of Australia carrying King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their Royal visits to Canada and the US before escorting them back to the UK on Empress of Australia's sister, RMS Empress of Britain (both belongs to Canadian Pacific Line). In July 1939, Captain Frank Pegram was appointed the commander of the ship.
With war being inevitable, on September 2, 1939, Glasgow was detached for patrol off Norway with Humber Force to intercept commerce raiders and blockade runners. The following day, Britain declared war on Germany, and on September 4, Glasgow and J-class destroyer Jersey (has got an episode on her, I can translate it may anyone want) intercepted German freighter Johannes Molken Buhr, which was later scuttled by her own crew. Glasgow was later sent to patrol in Skaggerak with her sisters Southampton, Sheffield-chan and Arethusa-class Aurora. However, due to Javelin-chan and Jersey-chan collided with each other, the mission was cancelled and they returned to Rosyth. 4 days later, Glasgow was sent to escort damaged submarine Spearfish back to her home base, during which, Glasgow-chan was attacked by enemy aircrafts without success.
With reports of Gneisenau in the area, Glasgow escorted Hood-neesan and Repulse in search for the new German battlecruiser. While returning to Britain, Glasgow and fellow sisters Southampton and Edinburgh was attacked by Luftwaffe's aircrafts, who dropped 120 bombs on them. Fortunately, Glasgow-chan wasn't damaged. Later on, Glasgow and Edinburgh escorted convoy KJ 003 made of 19 tankers from October 22 to 24. Towards the end of November, Glasgow joined 2 destroyers in search of German liner Bremen. She was then diverted to search for escaping Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in seek of revenging the sinking of armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi. A week later, Glasgow took part in the unsuccessful search for American merchantman City of Flint, which had been captured by Deutschland. In December 1939, she escorted three convoys: HN 003, ON 004/1, ON 006/1 with another convoy, ON 007/1 in early January.
Glasgow was transferred to another maid team, the 18th Cruiser Squadron on January 7, 1940. There, along with Newcastle, she escorted 6 convoys in January 1940. Glasgow captured German trawler Herrlichkeit off Tromsø on February 12 before returning to Belfast for repairs 5 days later, which last for a month. After repairs were completed, Glasgow-chan returned to action, just as the German was launching Operation Weserübung. On April 7, Glasgow sailed with Berwick, Portlandshire and York to intercept German warships in the area. Two days later, Glasgow-chan and her fleet was attacked by German Ju 88 and He 111 bombers off Bergen, which scored two near misses. The near misses caused minor flooding to the ship, knocking out her "A" turret and killed 2 of her crew. Things were worse for her teammates as Tribal-class destroyer leader Gurkha was sunk during the air attack. After this, Glasgow-chan was detached with Sheffield to Britain for repairs on the following day. While en route, they was involved in another air attack, with no damage sustained.
After a very short 22-hour repair, Glasgow was assigned with Sheffield and 6 Tribal-class destroyer leaders to land troops in Harstad and Namsos as part of Operation Henry and Harry. Galatea joined Glasgow and Sheffy in Operation Sickle, the landing of the 15th Infantry Brigade in Åndalsnes on April 23. 6 days later, Glasgow embarked the King of Norway, King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav, Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Halvdan Kolt and Minister of Defense Birger Ljungberg. Under the escort of Jackal and Javelin-chan, Glasgow arrived in Scapa Flow on May 1. Later that week, Glasgow embarked the Royal Marines at Greenock and carried out the initial occupation of Iceland during Operation Fork. The Marines disembarked at Reykjavik on May 10, under the protection of heavy cruiser Berwick, Glasgow as well as two F-class destroyers Fearless and Fortune. They carried out patrols in Iceland before sailing back to Liverpool for some refit. During her month-long refit in Liverpool, Italy declared war on Britain, and so on June 10, Glasgow's crew captured Italian freighter Gambiano.
Underway in the Mediterrenean
Returning to action in July, Glasgow-chan joined her big sister Southampton and the Salty Sussex and Shropshire. However, in the thick (bloody) British fog off Duncansby Head on July 16, our careless little maid collided with destroyer HMS Imogen. The collision caused extensive fire abroad and heavy flooding to the little destroyer. Imogen had to be abandoned and later sank. The incident resulted in nineteen of Imogen's crew and two of Glasgow's lost their lives. After rescuing the I-class destroyer crew, Glasgow returned to Liverpool and stayed there 3 months for repairs.
Late October 1940 saw Glasgow escorting Arklolicon and Barham to Gibraltar. There, she joined Force X to transport troops to Malta. After arriving in Malta on November 7, Glasgow joined the 7th Cruiser Squadron. She screened Lusty in her raid on Italian fleet in Taranto. 3 days later, Glasgow, along with Berwick, Gloucester and HMAS Sydney landed 3,400 troops in Piraeus, Greece. Later that month and in early December, Glasgow-chan escorted convoys MW 4 and ME 4 with Force E and Force F. While anchored at Suda Bay in Crete on December 3, Glasgow was attacked by a Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 flown by Italian ace Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia. 2 torpedoes hit the British cruiser, knocking out her propellers. Therefore, Glasgow-chan was sent to Alexandria for temporary repairs in January 1941.
Damaged Glasgow was sent to the Indian Ocean in early 1941 to protecc convoys from potential enemies. On February 15, Glasgow escorted some 4 landing ships through the Suez Canal. Later on, she was deployed with Hermes, (the salty) Shropshire, Emerald and her sister Enterprise (the British E-class cruiser, not the American legend Enty or Belfast x Enty, okay?) and Australian heavy cruisers Australia and Canberra to search for German cruiser Admiral Scheer, who had just sunk Canadian freighter Canadian Cruiser and AMC HMCS Rantaupandjang (Rawalpindi's little sister). On February 22, one of Glasgow's two Walrus spotted Admiral Scheer. However, fuel shortages prevented them from chasing down the German raider. A month later, Glasgow was deployed with Caledon, two K-class destroyers and two Indian trawler to provide support for the invasion of Italian Somaliland, as part of Operation Appearance.
After the successful landing in Somaliland, Glasgow joined HMS Cornwall, Portlandshire, Phoebe and HMAS Canberra as escort for convoy WS 6 from April 10-13, later relieved by C-class cruiser Colombo. Later in April, Glasgow relieved old heavy cruiser Hawkins to escort WS 7 until May 7. Our maid was sent to search for German commerce raider Pinguin later in May. From June 1941 to February 1942, Glasgow joined in convoy defense operations and escorted convoys WS 11 and WS 12. Another friendly fire incident occurred at midnight on December 9, 1941 when our careless maid opened fire with her 6-inch on friendly Indian patrol ship Prabhavati, mistaken her for a surfacing Japanese submarine. Prabhavati was sunk and Glasgow had to rescue the ship's survivors and sent them to Bombay.
With Enterprise in Singapore, 1942
In March, Glasgow escorted convoy WS 16 with her sister Newcastle. On April 1, she was relieved by Colombo and armed merchant cruiser Aleunia so that she can move to the US for repairs in April. Arriving in Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York on May 6 after a passage through Mombasa, Glasgow went through a month-long repair before returning to Britain. There, she was equipped with a new Type 284 fire-control radar and Type 271 airborne warning radar. New Oerlikons were also equipped to Glasgow-chan. She returned to Britain in August and arrived at Scapa Flow on September 3, 1942.

Upon arrival, Glasgow-chan was reassigned to the 10th Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet and assigned to the task of escorting British convoy bound for the Soviet Union. After some period of retrain and repairs lasted until December 1942, Glasgow was ready for action by the beginning of 1943. On January 20, 1943, Glasgow-chan was deployed with Bermuda and the salty cruiser Kent (hey shikika..) to screen Convoy JW 52 and returning convoy RA 52. She then patrolled around Icelandic waters and was involved in a minor incident on February 23. While anchoring at Seidisfjord, heavy weather dragged Glasgow and she was grounded. After a short repair, Glasgow-chan escorted King George V and her sister Howe to provide distant escort for homebound convoy RA 53 from Kola Inlet. Later in March, Glasgow encountered German blockade runner Regensberg carrying rubber, tungsten and many valuable goods from Japan. Unwanted to get their valuable supplies got captured by the also material-hungering Britain, the crew of Regensberg scuttled their ship. In heavy weathers, only 6 of the runner’s crew survived and was rescued by Glasgow. After some patrols in the Arctic, Glasgow was sent to a warmer place, the Southwest Approach to hunt for German blockade runners and commerce raiders.
In Scapa Flow, date unknown, maybe during her second deployment to the Arctic in late 42- early 43
The first action where our maid was involved was some action against French coastal shipping on June 12 with Crown Colony-class cruiser Bermuda, who joined Glasgow during JW 52. A week later, Glasgow escorted carrier Archer and corvettes of Escort Group B5 to hunt for submarines from Brest. By the end of the month, Glasgow provided Ocean Escort for minelaying operation of the 1st Minelaying Squadron in Northern Barrage. In late July, Glasgow joined Canadian destroyers HMCS Athabaskan, Iroquois and Polish destroyer ORP Orkan for assault patrols in the Bay of Biscay. After operations in the Bay of Biscay, she was anchored at Devonport Dockyard for repairs that last for a month, where her Walruses and catapults got removed to make room for additional Oerlikons and she was fitted with the new Type 283 Fire-Control Radar. She also had a new commander, Captain Charles Clark. On October 26, 1943, Glasgow embarked First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham and undertake the internment of the ashes of the old First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, who have just passed away on October 21 off Nab Tower. After that, she participated in Operation Tunnel series of attacks on French coastal shipping in November 1943. In December, Glasgow and Gambia took part in Operation Stonewall, the interception of blockade runners returning to occupied French from Japan. After 2 weeks of patrol, a Sunderland flying boat sighted German blockade runners Alsterufer, who was carrying precious Tungsten and rubber on December 27. Thus, Glasgow, Enterprise (again the E-class), Penelope and Ariadne were sent to capture the merchantman. This would lead into the Battle of the Bay of Biscay.
Painting by Norman Wilkinson, Glasgow and Enterprise firing at German ships during The Battle of the Bay of Biscay, 1943
The Kriegsmarine sent two flotillas to escort Alsterufer home: the 4th Torpedo Boat Flotilla consisted of torpedo boats T22, T23, T24 and T26 and the 8th Destroyer Flotilla consisted of Niimi-chan and her sisters Z24, Z27, Z32, Z37 and two torpedo boats T25 and T27. By 04:00 on December 28, the two German flotillas were waiting south of Cape Clear, but Alsterufer was nowhere to be seen. Unknown to the German, the blockade runner was sunk by Liberator bombers from Czechoslovak No. 311 Squadron and the No. 86 Squadron. By midday, the two German flotillas met each other. One hour later, they were spotted by Allied aircrafts. Meanwhile, a Fw 200 Condor bomber detected Glasgow and Enterprise, and attacked them. As they were detected, Glasgow changed her course towards the Northeast. At 13:32, from a range of 16 miles, Glasgow-chan detected the German destroyers. Captain Clark ordered Glasgow to open fire at Niimi with her “A” and “B” turrets, guided by the newly installed Type 273 radar. Enterprise followed some few minutes later. In the first minutes of the battle, though being targeted, Niimi wasn't damaged. Our

At 14:35, Glasgow reversed her course to chase down the retreating German. By this time, Glasgow and Enterprise was separated after the torpedobait and was acting independently. The German launched another torpedo attack against the charging British cruisers, whilst the two British were keeping accurate 6-inch shots. At around 14:38, after firing her first salvo of torpedoes, Z27 was critically damaged by a 6-inch shell from Enterprise, causing fire and slowing the German destroyer down. After being hit, Z27 launched the second salvo of 4 torpedoes, however, just like the first salvo, no torpedoes hit the British cruisers.
Meanwhile, Glasgow was concentrating her fire on torpedo boat T25. The little *Elbing-*class torpedo boat was hit in her aft torpedo tubes area, killing many of her crew. A second shell hit T25’s funnel, immobilize her. Being a sitting duck at that moment, T25 requested her big sis T22 to cover for her. In the meantime, Glasgow shifted fire towards T25’s sister, T26. T26 was bracketed by near misses from the accurate radar-guided guns from Glasgow and was critically hit with a shell right into her boiler room at 14:40, slowing the ship down. T22, trying to help her crippled sister, was focused by Enterprise, who hit her with shells and fragments from the near misses. After firing her 10.5 cm guns and all of her torpedoes, which proved harmless to the cruisers, T22 laid smoke and retreated.
Enterprise finished off the crippled T26 at 14:45 with a single torpedo whereas Glasgow hit Z27’s magazine at point-blank range, sinking the drifting destroyer in a large magazine explosion which killed most of her staff. Enterprise fired her guns and a torpedo, which reduce T25 to a burning and sinking wreck by 14:50. The British cruisers, low on ammunition and fuel, withdrew towards Plymouth.
The Battle of the Bay of Biscay was a complete victory for the British. Glasgow and Enterprise sank a destroyer (Z27) and two torpedo boats (T25 and T26) and further severely damaged another TB, T22 while receiving minimal damage to themselves. 532 Kriegsmarine’s sailors were killed during the battle, further lowering Kriegsmarine's morale after Scharnhorst was sunk in the Battle of the North Cape 2 days earlier. The failure in Bay of Biscay and North Cape marked a sour end of 1943 for the German. From then on, in addition to the lost of 3 blockade runners in the South Atlantic, Germany could only trade with her only real ally, Japan, via small little submarines, hampering her supplies.
After the Battle of the Bay of Biscay, Glasgow and Enterprise withdrew to Britain. En route, they were attacked by He 177 armed with Fritz-X Glider bomb on December 28. Neither of the ship was hit, however. They arrived at Plymouth the following day. Glasgow was repaired for some weeks before returning to defend convoys MKF 026, MKF 028A and MKF 029 from mid January to mid-March.
Bombarding Cherbourg, June 25, 1944. USS Quincy in the background
In April, Glasgow joined US Western Task Force consisted of USN battleships Texas and Arkansas, Free French cruiser Montcalm and Georges Leygues, nine USN destroyers and three Royal Navy Hunt-class destroyers. During Operation Neptune, they took part in bombardment exercises in Cape Wrath. On D-Day (June 6, 1944), Glasgow took part in the bombardment of the Omaha Beach with ships of Force C. She continued this action until June 20, when her squadron was detached to bombard the port of Cherbourg. After returning to Portland on the following day, Glasgow again joined her peer Enterprise, US battleship
After a long refit, Glasgow was back in action by May 1945. By this time, Germany had surrendered, so she was transferred to the Indian Ocean to fight the already desperate Japanese Empire. On August 22, 1945, Glasgow sailed with Jamaica to the British East Indies Fleet. By this time, Japan had got nuked and was preparing for surrender.
On October 5, 1945, Glasgow relieved Phoebe as the flagship of the 5th Cruiser Squadron. After serving in the Indian Ocean for two years, she steamed back to Portsmouth and was put into reserve. Later in September 1948, after being recommissioned for active service, Glasgow was appointed the flagship of the British West Indies Station. She attended the Halifax bicentenary celebrations in Nova Scotia in 1949. In October 1950, she returned to Britain and was refitted at Chatham before being transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1951. Glasgow was appointed the flagship of the Malta station, under Admiral the Earl Mountbatten of Burma.
Lord Mountbatten aboard Glagow, 1952
2 years later, she and her crew took part in film “Sailor of the King” as the fictional cruiser HMS Cambridge. In the same year, Glasgow-chan took part in the Fleet Review to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Together with Town-class cruisers Gambia and Bermuda, new cruiser Eagle, seven destroyers, Glasgow-chan escorted the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh aboard Royal Yacht HMY Britannia on their world tour when they arrived at Malta on May 2, 1954. With Gambia, she took part in the withdrawal of the 40th Royal Marines Commando Brigade from Port Said, Sudan, giving the independence to the African nation.
In 1955, after 5 years of serving in Malta, Glasgow returned to Britain and joined the Flag Officer D Flotilla of the Home Fleet. In late 1955, Glasgow-chan was decommissioned in Portsmouth. However, with the Suez Canal Crisis in 1956, she was temporary called back before being officially decommissioned in November 1956. Glasgow was considered a surplus at the time of economic hardship and the budget was tight, so she was put on the disposal list in March 1958. In July 4, 1958, Glasgow was sold to BISCO for scrapping and left Portsmouth. She was broken up on July 8, 1958 at Hughes Bolckow’s yard in Blyth.
IV. In Azur Lane
Glasgow was put into the game in the mid-November update. She is a Rare ship which can be obtained through the Light Construction Pool with a build time of 01:25:00. Upon her introduction, there was a short period when her Construction Rate was increased for 2.5%. Glasgow is still unvoiced.
Similar to most light cruiser, Glasgow-chan has three equipment slots for CL Guns (115%->135%), Torpedoes (120%->130% and Anti-Air Guns (110%) . Glasgow has two class-specified Assault Skills: “Full Firepower” which increase her own firepower and “All Out Barrage” which triggers her class’ barrage. She also has a Defensive Skill, “Swift Defender” (related to the fact that she defended many convoys?) which reduces damage dealt to the fleet.
In the wiki, there is something wrong with the translation of her Self Intro line as Glasgow could never taken part in the Battle of the North Cape, as she was busy fighting the German destroyers off France when the battle occurred. Also in her Self-Intro, she mentioned having bad eyesight, related to the fact that she rammed and sank Imogen in foggy weather and mistook Prabhavati for a Japanese loliboat. (So, buy her glass :> ). Secretary 1 and 2 referred to her sisters Newcastle and Sheffield. Glasgow also have Additional Lines when sortieing with her sisters Sheffield, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle and her big sis Southampton.

KMS Scharnhorst - The Northern Hunter
Scharnhorst was a German (Ironblood) battlecruiser and the lead ship of her class of 2 ships. Nicknamed "The Ugly Sisters" by the Royal Navy, she and her sister Gneisenau participated in many action including Operation Weserübung, where she engaged battlecruiser HMS Renown and sank British carrier HMS Glorious; Operation Berlin, the successful raiding of British convoys in the Atlantic; the Channel Dash and finally her last mission in the Battle of the North Cape. Though cursed with mechanical and design problems, her crew was skilful and fought bravely until the last minute of the ship.
1. Name: Scharnhorst
Ordered as Ersatz Elsass by the newly formed Kriegsmarine to replace the old pre-dreadnought Elsass, the keel of Elsass was laid down on July 16, 1935 at Kriegsmarinewerft Shipyard in Wilhelmshaven. During construction, Ersatz Elsass's name was changed to Scharnhorst. Scharny was launched on October 3, 1936. The launching ceremony was attended by many high-profile people in the Nazi government including the artist with weird moustache (that's Adolf Hitler if anyone mind); Generalfeldmarschall Werner von Blomberg, German Minister of War and the widow of the captain of the World War I Scharnhorst (Scharn's mom?).
Fitting out on Scharnhorst is done by January 1939 and she was commissioned on January 7. She was first commanded by Käpitan zur See Otto Ciliax. During her sea trial, the bow was flooded with seawater in heavy sea, causing the "Anton" turret's electrical system to fail. This caused Scharny-sensei to have a big modification in her bow. The bow was raised, resulting in something called the "Atlantic bow". Some modifications were made to the ship, and Scharnhorst was ready by November 1939 (already missed the first phase of Blitzkrieg). During her reconstruction, KzS Ciliax fell ill in September 1939 and was replaced by Käpitan zur See Kurt-Caesar Hoffmann. Hoffmann and the ship will earn many success in the upcoming months. By the time she was ready for combat, Britain and France had declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland, and the British Home Fleet had blockaded German coast.
Scharnhorst in port, winter 1939-40
Right after her repairs were finished, Scharnhorst sailed in company with her sister Gneisenau, the (salty) light cruiser Köln and 9 destroyers to draw British attention from the pursuit for Admiral Graf Spee on November 21, 1939. Two days later, Scharny-sensei encountered British armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi. At 16:07, she spotted Rawalpindi and engaged the vessel at 17:03. Though being hit by a 6-inch shell from the AMC, Scharnhorst was undamaged. By 17:16, Rawalpindi was burning badly after being hit by numerous 28 cm shells from Scharny-sensei and Gneisenau. Rawalpindi was later sunk, securing Scharnhorst's first kill. Admiral Wilhelm Marschall ordered her crew to pick up survivors, however, Scharnhorst later abandoned the rescuing operation and returned to Wilhelmshaven after detecting British light cruiser Newcastle. Right after Rawalpindi being sunk, 4 battleships: Hood-neesan, Nelsol, Rodnol and French Dunkerque was sent to intercept the sisters. However, the German fleet had withdrawn to Wilhelmshaven by the end of the month. The German battlecruisers were damaged, not by the British, but by heavy weather, so they were overhauled up until early 1940.
After the completion of repairs, Scharnhorst was sent for gunnery training in the Baltic sea. Ice kept her there until February 5. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau left Wilhelmshaven on April 7, with Admiral Hipper to support the landings on Narvik and Trondheim as a part of Operation Weserübung. Later that day, they came under attack by British bomber, but received no hits. Actually, the thing that was cursing Scharnhorst is the heavy weather (lol ok), which caused structural damages and flooded Scharny-sensei's fuel stores. The following morning, Hipper was detached to help the Z-loliboots, leaving Scharnhorst with Gneisenau. Later, on April 9, the sisters ran into a skirmish with British battlecruiser Renown. Early in the northern morning, Gneisenau's radar detected the old British battlecruiser. At 05:00, Renown opened fire on Gneisenau, scoring two hits which disabled Gneisenau's rear turret. Three minutes later, the German battlecruisers returned fire without success, due to malfunction in Scharnhorst's radar and Gneisenau's being damaged. At 05:18, Renown switched target to Scharnhorst. As the result, the two German battlecruisers used their superior speed to flee from the old British sister. However, the damn northern weather continued to curse Scharny-sensei when it (again?) flooded Scharny's bow and took her "Anton" turret out of action. Her turbines also started to have problems, so Scharnhorst dropped her speed to 25 knots (still fast enough to escape from Renown). On April 12, they rendezvoused with Hipper. Later that day, a RAF recon aircraft spotted the three, which prompted an air attack. However, Mother Nature was then in the German side when she provided the German with poor visibility, which prevented the British from bombing the three and returned to Kiel safely.
Scharny was repaired in two months before sailing back to Norway on June 4, once again with Hipper. On June 7, the squad rendezvoused with tanker Dithmarschen to refuel. The following day, they spotted oil tanker Oil Pioneer (that's a lot of oil in two sentences, hopefully the US Army is not here =D ) and her escorting corvette. The two British ships were sunk quickly. Admiral Marschall detached Hipper and 4 destroyers to intercept British shipping near Trondheim, while the two Scharnhorst-class would proceed to Harstad.
At the same time, Arklolicon had just departed Norway, bound for Britain
Scharnhorst opening fire at Glorious, May 8, 1940
Though a great success in sinking a British carrier, Scharnhorst was damaged and was put into Trondheim for temporary repairs before steaming back to Kiel. On June 11, Scharnhorst got attacked by 12 Hudsons bomber. Fortunately, they all missed. Two days later, Scharnhorst was involved into another air attack, this time by Arklolicon's Skua. Scharnhorst shot down 8 Ark Royal's Skua. Though 1 bomb did hit Scharny, it didn't do her any damages since it didn't explode. After 10 days of repair, she sailed back to Kiel, being attacked by 2 waves of Arklolicon's Swordfish and RAF's Beaufort. Her Anti-Air drove off the attackers. The following day, she safely returned to Kiel and have a long 6-month repair there.
Following the completion of repairs, Scharny once again join Gneisenau in a raiding mission in the Atlantic, codenamed Operation Berlin. The two sisters were expected to began their raids in December 1940, however, a storm prevented them from action until late January 1941. On January 22, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sailed to the Northern Atlantic under the command of Admiral Günther Lütjens. In Skagerrak, they were detected by the British, but thanks to their great speed and superior radar, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau evaded the superior British fleet. By February 3, they have broken freely into the North Atlantic. At 08:30 on February 8, Scharny and Gneisy detected convoy HX 106. However, because the convoy is screened by battleship Ramillies, Lütjens could just depend on the U-Boats to destroy them even though Scharnhorst's commander Hoffmann intended to lure Ramilles after her so that Gneisenau could freely attack the convoy. Two weeks later, they detected another convoy, which Scharnhorst sank the oiler Lustrous.
Later on, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau moved to Cape Verde and detected another convoy escorted by Malaya on March 8. Once again Lütjens left the convoy to the mercy of loliboats. German U-Boats later sank 28,488 tons of cargo. Malaya also spotted them and try to chase them down, but the speed of the old QE-class battleship is no match for Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Later on, Scharny sank Greek freighter Marathon. On March 15, she detected an undefended convoy. Scharny sank 2 ships that day. Several days later, Scharnhorst encountered the main convoy. She sank 7 merchant ships for 27,277 tons. After being hunted by Nelson and Rodney, Lütjens returned to Brest, convinced that chances for further success is small. Scharnhorst returned to Brest on March 22 and had a 4-month repair due to her boilers' problems. As the result, she missed Operation Rheinübung sortied by Bismarck.
Fortunately for her, she was not the battleship that shared the fate with Bismarck. Bismarck was chased down by the whole Royal Navy Home Fleet as well as her Mediterranean Fleet and was sunk. Had Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sortied in that mission, they would have probably sunk as well. After repairs are completed in Brest, Scharnhorst went to La Pallice to make room for Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen in Brest. On July 23, she was spotted by RAF's recon aircraft. The following night, she was targeted by Halifax heavy bombers. Scharnhorst was hit by 3 1000-lb bombs and 2 500-lb bombs from the bombers, causing severe damage to the ship. As the result, poor Scharnhorst-sensei was drydocked for another 4 months. In Brest, Leipzig's and Nürnberg's torpedo tubes were installed on Scharnhorst. Scharnhorst being drydocked further prevented the Kriegsmarine from letting their surface ship loose in the Atlantic.
After long repairs, Scharnhorst returned to action in late January 1942. At the same time, the German Naval High Command decided that the Scharnhorst sisters and Prinz Eugen should be returned to Germany in order to intercept convoys to the Soviet Union. This operation, codenamed "Operation Cerberus", more well-known as The Channel Dash began at 23:00 on February 11. Under the cover of darkness, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen set sail for Kiel. En route, Scharnhorst was attacked by Swordfishes and Beauforts, without damage, however. But the ship struck 2 mines (good job little minesweepers) and was (again) drydocked until August (that's a lot of drydocking). During repairs, Käpitan zur See Friedrich Hüffmeier was assigned to the ship to relieve KzS Hoffmann, who was promoted to Konteradmiral.
RAF's aerial recon mission revealing Scharnhorst at dock in Kiel after the Channel Dash
After another major repair being done on the ship, Scharnhorst stayed in Germany for training. During exercises, she collided with loliboat U-523 and was drydocked (again) until September. She was cursed by turbine problems in late 1942. On March 8, 1943, Scharny set sail to Norway with Prinz Eugen. She met Lützow and Tirpitz at Narvik on March 14. They conducted some training in the Bear Island. During the training, on April 8, Scharnhorst suffered an internal explosion in the "Caesar" turret. Thus, in addition to fuel shortages prevented Scharnhorst, Lützow and Tirpitz from major operation until September.
Scharnhorst in her 1943 configuration
Shortly after repairs were done, on September 6, Scharnhorst took part in Operation Zitronella, the bombardment of Free Norwegian island of Spitzbergen. She shelled fuel tanks, coal mines and destroyed 2 76mm emplacements. After returning to Narvik, Tirpitz got seriously damaged by British midget submarines on September 22, leaving only Scharnhorst in the Arctic Task Force, which would come to curse Scharnhorst later on. A few weeks later, commandment was given to Käpitan zur See Fritz Hintze.
By the time, the Wehrmacht is in a desperate situation against the Red Army. They had lost the Battle of Stalingrad in January 1943 and Battle of Kursk in July. Throughout the Eastern Front, they were being pushed back. This pushed Großadmiral Karl Dönitz to make a decision of sending Scharnhorst to intercept British convoys bringing supplies to the Soviet Union. On December 22, 1943, Luftwaffe's Do 18 aircrafts spotted convoy JW 55B bound for Murmansk. 3 days later, at Christmas, Scharnhorst and 5 Type 1936A destroyers left Altafjord to intercept the convoy under the command of Konteradmiral Erich Bey. In the morning of December 26, Konteradmiral Bey detached his 5 destroyers southward to search for the convoy since he couldn't spot the enemy ships in the foggy weather.
Unfortunately for Scharnhorst, by 1943 Tea's radar system is not as crap as Glorious' in 1940, so instead of her finding the convoy, the salty Norfolk, and our two lovely maids Sheffield and Belfast spotted Scharny first at 09:00, starting the Battle of the North Cape. They opened fire on Scharnhorst with their 8-inch and 6-inch guns, inflicting minimal damage. Scharnhorst also repelled without success. The British fleet and Scharn-sensei both withdrew. Noon approached and the visibility was still crap, and once again Scharnhorst encountered British cruisers, just after noon. The British and German ships exchanged fire, with Scharnhorst hitting Norfolk first with her 28 cm, disabling her radar and one of Norfolk-chan's 4 turrets. Sheffy was also hit and damaged. Things was even worse for Scharny, one of her turret, and perhaps even worse, her radar got knocked out by Norfolk's 8-inch, rendering her virtually blind. After the skirmish, Konteradmiral Bey ordered Scharnhorst back to her base.
Scharnhorst sailed south to Norwegian coast with the British cruisers chasing her. Soon, Norfolk and Sheffield encountered engine problem and was forced to drop back, leaving Belfast the maid to keep radar contact on Scharny. At about 16:00 in the afternoon, Scharnhorst was safe and sound, or, perhaps she might wrongly think so.
Meanwhile, KGV-class battleship Duke of York had detected Scharnhorst on her radar at a range of 29,700 yards (27.7 km) at 16:32. The dark gloomy Arctic fog was illuminated by Belfap's star shells at 16:48, followed by Duke of York's large 14-inch shells. A salvo disabled her "Anton" and "Bruno" turret while another salvo rekted her seaplane's hangar. Scharnhorst returned fire with no success though some of her 28 cm came very close to Duke of York, even cutting off her wireless aerials. She turned north to flee but then was surprised by Norfolk and Belfast, who made her turn eastward. Scharnhorst once again used her fast 30 knots speed to cut through the rough Northern Atlantic. But unfortunately for her, a 14-inch shell from Duke of York hit her No. 1 boiler room at 18:20, slowing Scharnhorst down to just 20 knots. This allowed 4 S-class destroyers Salvage, Saumarez, Scorpion and Free Norwegian HNoMS Stord to catch her and launched torpedoes at her. Though Scharnhorst tried her best to gun down the pursuers with secondary armament like she did with Ardent and Acasta back in 1940, even managing to hit Saumarez many times, 4 torpedoes struck her at 18:50, slowing her down to just 10 knots and sealed her fate. Admiral Bey ordered to her crew "fight to the last shell", which they would until her last turret was taken out of action. Duke of York and the British fleet soon caught up and fire countless number of shells at her. Cruisers Belfast, Jamaica, Sheffield and Norfolk joined the fight and unleashed their full broadsides of torpedo at 19:15, joined by destroyers Matchless, Musketeer, Opportune and Virago. A total of 19 torpedoes hit Scharnhorst.
At 19:45 on December 26, Scharnhorst capsized and sank in two massive magazine explosions and her propellers still turning. Out of her complement of 1,968 sailors, only three dozens of men made it out alive from the northern freezing water, 30 were rescued by Scorpion and 6 by Matchless. 1,932 people perished, including Konteradmiral Erich Bey and Scharnhorst's new captain KzS Fritz Hintze.
Blindfolded Scharnhorst's sailors disembarking in Scapa Flow after the battle
In September 2000, BBC and the Royal Norwegian Navy conduct a search for the wreck of Scharnhorst. Research vessel Sverdrup II scanned the ship, and underwater recovery vessel HNoMS Tyr examined her visually. The wreck is upside down and the bow is blown up, possibly by a large magazine explosion.

The crest of battlecruiser Scharnhorst
Scharnhorst was one of the most important ship of the Kriegsmarine. Her skillful crew fought well and brought terror to the opposite side. After the Battle Of The North Cape, Admiral Fraser, the British commander must stated that "Gentlemen, the battle against Scharnhorst has ended in victory for us. I hope that if any of you are ever called upon to lead a ship into action against an opponent many times superior, you will command your ship as gallantly as Scharnhorst was commanded today". Due the the bravery of their crew, Scharnhorst won many victories against British merchant as well as ships of the Royal Navy.
The vital importance impact of radar was demonstrated in her loss. After Scharny was lost, the Kriegsmarine also lose half of her surface battleship strength, leaving Tirpitz as the only capital ship at the time. As the result, they can no longer challenge the Royal Navy in the Atlantic. The loss of Scharnhorst would prove fatal to the Kriegsmarine.
V. In Azur Lane
Introduced into the game in the event "Divergent Chessboard", Scharnhorst is an Elite ship which can be obtained through Map Drop in B3 and D2, D3, D4 of the event "Divergent Chessboard" (and I haven't cleared A4 yet due to my dock running out of slots) and B1 and B3 of the event "Scherzo of Iron and Blood"
She has 3 equipment slots for BB Guns (105%->135%), CL/DD Guns (150%) and AA Guns (70%). Scharny has 2 Assault skills: "Sniper" (related to the fact that she shares the longest shot ever hit a target with Warspite which hit Glorious' hangar on May 8, 1940 from a range of 24,000 yards) which fire a barrage at random enemy ships with 100% crit chance and "Torpedo Launch" (related to her 6 tubes of torpedo borrowed from Nürnberg and Leipzig) which fires 3 torpedoes towards the front, which is only available after the 2nd limit break. Thus, she is somewhat effective in battle.
Her character having an eyepatch can be dated to the fact that she was designed to be a commerce raider. In her Self-intro, Aquisition, Secretary (Touch) and Affinity (Dissapointed) lines, she states that she will never fall back, which refer to Admiral Bey's order to "fight to the large shell" when under siege by the British. The Skill Activation line mentions the her three turrets respectively. Otherwise than that, I can say that Scharnie completely devotes herself to shikikan. So, respect her.

Gulberg Housing Scheme Islamabad, for the most part called IBECHS Phase 3, is a lodging plan by Intelligence Bureau Cooperative Housing Scheme (IBECHS). Made at the prime domain of standard Islamabad Expressway close to Airport Chowk, it is conceivably the sort of grasped you have been searching for.
